Tragic Beauty: Dorothy Dandridge

Dorothy Dandridge

Dorothy Dandridge got an early start. She was a child performer in a musical act called The Wonder Children, and then went on to perform in the musical trio, The Dandridge Sisters. As a teenager, she appeared in a few small roles and married Harold Nicholas in 1942, at the tender age of 20. She stopped performing during this time because of Nicholas’ abuse and womanizing ways. Soon, she became pregnant and went into labor at home. Dorothy waited on Nicholas as long as she could before going on to the hospital. The baby was born with severe brain damage and needed private, in-home care. This dealt a fatal blow to Dandridge, who felt helpless concerning her daughter Harolyn. She divorced Harold.
